Deacon Meeting Minutes for June 9, 2008

In attendance: Adam Bruso, Drema Canterbury, Barbara Chandler, George Creal, Leroy Venn, Hal Gersch, Glen Goldsmith, Matthew Haisten, Janie Hicks, Arnold Johns, Carol Kennemore, Jim Porter, Nancy Riggs, Gettina Yip, Carlisle Young, Roger Young, Susan Bennett, Samuel Mwaniki, Scott Weimer, Frank Eldridge.

Nancy Riggs opened us with a devotional taken from the scripture reading placed on the back of the team Honduras T-shirts. She and Barbara Chandler from the group of deacons, along with many others will depart this weekend on another Honduras adventure.

Janie Hicks with the Congregational Care team, mentioned the need to find rides for some of the aging members of the congregation who are seeking rides to the Sunday worship services. Frank Eldridge mentioned a couple of others who will in the near future need help in attending services at NAPC. Besides working on that effort, Janie mentioned that Sally Price had asked her to help her in contacting members by phone.

Carol Kleywegt, and Barbara Chandler both mentioned that they have been asked to attend the upcoming meeting of the Hospitality team, to create, and attract new members to small neighborhood gatherings. This is also something that Scott Weimer brought up, as being a focus of the new member classes, as well as encouraging them to participate in ministry groups. He mentioned that first we need to set up the infrastructure so that it was easy for the new members as well as current ones to understand the functions, and focus of the ministry teams, and efforts should be made to making the steps to becoming involved in them clearer, and more straightforward.

Carlisle Young mentioned that the Property team will be working in with Marti Jackson to supply the elementary group with bleachers they can use in the classroom on the first floor, previously the archives room. Also there is a desire on Marti’s part to regain use of the door off from the lower parking area, near the bottom of the ramp to the second floor. In making this door a main access to the pre-school area, we could then lock off the double glass doors to that area near the elevator, in an attempt to make it less accessible to outsiders, and more secure. The workday is scheduled for June 21st, and all are welcome.

Roger Young addressed the group with a request from a group of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, who are looking for a setting where they can worship, preferably on a Sunday morning for about five hours. We would not have space available during our normal worship time, but are looking into how we might be able to accommodate them in giving them a place to worship.

Arnold Johns spoke to the current situation of the Church’s finances. During this difficult economic time, we too as a congregation are suffering from a lack in the amount of giving. We currently are down in our year to date receipts, as well as this year compared to last year. The finance team will place some notices in our publications in an attempt to boost giving during this summer, which is normally a slower giving time.

Adam Bruso mentioned that the NAPC directories are currently on track, and expect distribution to begin sometime in August.
Scott Weimer closed us in prayer and we adjourned to dinner.

There will not be a July Deacon’s meeting. We will meet again in August on the third Monday, the 18th.
